  5. Angela, you could pick as many as you like! I have a feeling, we'd all have very long lists! And I loved THE SECRET GARDEN! :)

  6. The Book Thief! That was such an awesome book, and the beauty of the writing really made an impact.

  7. Harry Potter for sure. I know that is technically 7 books, but I wouldn't be a reader without that series.

  8. Debi, I love that book too! When Nightshade City released it was sitting right next to The Book Thief at B&N! I was in awe that my book was next to it! ;)

  10. ooh awesome! Let's see, a book that changed my life. It's hard to pick just one.
I would say Christopher Pike's Remember Me. That was the first book i read in elementary school that i read and made me realize the reason i didn't like reading before was because i was reading the wrong genre of books

Hmm... a book that changed my life... Harry Potter and The Dragon Riders of Pern. Both gave me a love of great fantastic worlds.

  13. What an incredible giveaway! The book that came to mind first isn't MG or YA, but you said ANY book, so...Refuge by Terry Tempest Williams. It made me really appreciate my mother and changed me with a beautifully bittersweet reminder that we don't have all the time in the world with those we love, and that the art of dying gracefully is as difficult as living with grace.

  15. What a lovely contest!

I would have to say the first book I remember making me cry was CALL OF THE WILD by Jack London. In that moment I realized the power of the written word.

  16. Ohhhhh, definitely The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. If you haven't read this book, I'm going to torture you until you do. *glares threateningly*

  18. Holy crap. I think that's my cat.

Lord of the Rings made me love to read, which changed my life. Harry Potter made me want to write, which changed my life. Nightshade City was the first novel ever published by an author that I (sort of) knew, which changed my life.

  19. Changed my life? Wow, that's a tall order. I would have said the Secret Garden, but that's taken. So, I'll go with Cry the Beloved Country.

  20. Hmm... a book that changed my life... Each one I read brings something to me in some way, so they ALL do that for me. But in choosing one, I would say: "Here, There Be Dragons" would be my most recent real-life changer. Any why, you may ask? Because Mr. James A. Owen not only wrote that fabulous first book of his ongoing series, but he ILLUSTRATED it completely as well! A dream I have always wished for myself!

  21. I like the premise of this contest. I loved reading Archie Comics and Encyclopedia Brown books when I was little but the book that changed my life was A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle. I became a reader from that book - and learned that I loved fantasy/sci fi stories. I went to a book signing in NY and met Madeline in 1993. She autographed my book and was soo humble that I was just really impressed with this author. Because of her, I began writing for children. She changed who I was and who I have become in totally wonderful ways.

The Lord of the Rings. I never read fantasy AT ALL until those books (they're the inspiration for my WiP novel as well). Wouldn't be where I am without them!

  24. It was the best of times... it was the worst of times... I'd have to credit Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities as being the number one life-changing book of my childhood.
And yes, I'd love to win a kid's book! Thanks for the chance. Donna

The book that changed my life was Charlotte's Web. It was really what started my love of reading when I was in first grade.

  26. How hard to pick just one book! A book that changed my life is Letters to Judy: What Your Kids Wish They Could Tell You. I must have checked this book out of the library a hundred times. It was great insight for me as a child, to see that questions I had were asked by other kids too. It made me feel normal :)

Thank you for this awesome contest! I follow via GFC as Tiffany Drew.

    Hilary,

    Following!

As far as books go, everyone I have ever read has had an impact of some sort on me. Whether it be me thinking of a friend I hadn't thought of in years to reconsidering my views on an issue. For example, every time I read Bridge to Terabithia I think of my childhood friend growing up.

  33. Oh it is impossible to narrow it down, but two of the first that I bought for myself at the school book fair, long before most of you were born, were:
What the Witch Left by Ruth Chew
The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by EL Konigsburg

both were amazing and had my imagination and attention until I finished. In fact, I just re-read them again for the first time in many years. I still love them. They inspire me.

Charlie and the Choc Factory, Ian Fleming (a little early start for these!), Jack Finney, Asimov... so many that shaped me. I also loved biographies, reading about people's lives and stories. Thanks to my mom who instilled a love of reading and helped me get a library card.

  38. What a generous give away. That is a tough question. I'm going to go back to books that stick out in my mind that really moved me. Hatchet and Where the Red Fern Grows. There are many books that have left an impression on me since but I always think of those two.

And I just won a copy of Nightshade City! It should arrive soon. I can't wait to read it and same with my daughter who loves Redwall. I'm a follower.

  39. Wow, Hilary you are so awesome.

There is only on book that really changed my life and opened me up to reading again and eventually becoming a writer and that author was JK Rowling.

Really, HP came to my life with the first movie came out in 2001. My father had just past away. It was the magical lift I needed. A year later after the second movie, I realized these were based on books. SO that is where my passion for HP began.
