Where I'm from, many of us complain that there is no snow in December, and then, when it finally hits in January (and oh, does it hit) we complain that there is too much snow--not a happy medium when it comes to Chicago weather! The above picture displays exactly what Chicago looks like right now, and yes, that's a Chicago dog! :)
It got me to thinking about our writing environment. In other words, in what physical setting do we write best? I do love to write when the neighborhood is encased in snow and I'm all warm and cozy in my house, but I'd have to say fall is my favorite season! There is nothing better than writing on a cool fall day, when the sky is overcast, and all the leaves are whipping around the streets, and Halloween is right around the corner! BOO!
What about you? Where and when are you at your writing best?

I can write almost anywhere, but now I miss snow!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you~ a Fall day, preferably brisk with a hint of rain. Being shut in by full-on thunderstorms and snowy weather is great for me, too!
ReplyDeleteI think I write best in winter. In Minnesota it always feels like our nice days our limited so in the summer it is hard to stay in and write. We have no snow on the ground in Minneapolis so I'm a little jealous of your Chicago snow
ReplyDeleteMatt, I can write anywhere except at my son's karate lessons when someone is playing a video game in the waiting area. Mute would be nice! ;)
ReplyDeleteJess, great minds think alike! ;)
Carrie, I just went and shoveled AGAIN! Please, don't feel bad, I'm sure you'll get yours soon enough! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, the snow is coming our way soon! Not super excited to shovel!
ReplyDeleteMary, at least it's good exercise! ;)
DeleteHi, Hilary. I'm a Chicago writer, too, so just finished digging out. I love watching the makeover shows on TV where some decorator comes in a creates a beautiful office space. Mine is a huge mess in a real basement/basement. But maybe that's why it works for me, because I concentrate on my work and my computer screen, and not the space around me. Or, maybe that's just an excuse for not cleaning my office.
ReplyDeleteHa! Susan, I'm a messy Marvin at heart, but I work soooo much better in a clean space. At least it feels like I do! I have an office, but do a lot of writing at my kitchen table. Nice to have the family around, so I don't feel like a complete hermit! ;)
DeleteI'm in Chicago, too, and I agree with you! Give me snow, hot tea or coffee, and I'm good to go. Something about the entire scene really helps the creative juices flow.
ReplyDeleteI say this as I procrastinate on Blogger while it's snowing outside. ;)
Julie, procrastinate is most writers middle names! I turn it all off when I write! Too tempting! :)
DeleteCold rainy days are my favorite. Writing flows smoother in the cooler months of autumn and snowbound winter. I'm guilty of complaining Mother Nature is holding back NY's snow. This has been a really mild winter so far. Nothing beats have a fire roaring and the wind beating on the house.(Hugs)Indigo
ReplyDeleteIndigo, just wait! I heard the weather is headed your way. I always want the snow until I get THE SNOW! My ribs are so sore from shoveling the last 2 days. Good exercise, I guess! ;)
