  3. Wowza! That's a lot of books. My favorite holiday tradition is hot chocolate and popcorn under Christmas tree lights after we get all the decorations up. I'll be tweeting this! :D

  4. After the family exchanges gifts on Christmas Eve, all of the adults put a meaningful item in our memory box. The item represents something memorable that happened during the year. For me this year it will be my first rejection letter! :)

  5. Wow!
My favorite tradition is Wigilia--that's the traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner, during which we break and share oplatki ("Christmas wafers") with family and friends. It's a little hard to explain succinctly. :)

  7. YAY! Books! Okay, favorite tradition is stockings. When I was a kid, my sister and I would wake up early on Christmas morning and although we couldn't awaken our parents, we could empty and enjoy the little gifts in our stockings. My sister and I would unwrap the small packages, and eat the candies. Now I stuff my daughters' stockings the night before Christmas and I love to wake up and see my girls with their little toys and treats. :)

  9. You are so awesome, Hilary!

My favorite holiday tradition is visits from the family. There's nothing quite like a good excuse to hang out with loved ones.

And I'm tweeting/facebooking this. Just because.

  10. Hilary, you are so fantabuloso!! Love this. Sharing away for you. :)

My favorite holiday tradition is one we've done since the first year we were married. All our relatives come over our house Christmas morning (after they open their gifts at home, etc...) and we have a gigantic Christmas morning breakfast. My house looks like a restaurant for a few hours. It's my kids favorite tradition and I'm hoping will always be a precious childhood memory for them.

  11. Ha! I want some! *cough* erm... As for Christmas traditions... love the tree decorating with the family--we drink cocoa (stirring with candy canes) and joke about the fact my husband is going to rearrange everything anyway. The cat leaps into the boxes... all sorts of fun.

  12. Awesome giveaway!

My family's tradition is a little ridiculous, but every year my brothers and sister come over Christmas night and we all play beer pong. >.<

  13. Wohooo! What an awesome giveaway! I'll tweet it and FB it. :)

One of my favorite family traditions is Christmas Eve Pajamas. As long as I can remember, we've opened our Christmas Pajamas on Christmas Eve...I did it as a child and now do it with my daughter and husband.

  14. Wow! Look at all those books. Off to Tweet about your giveaway!

  15. My favorite tradition is that my family opens one gift on Christmas Eve: Pajamas. Then we wear them on Christmas morning.

  16. Great giveaway!
My favorite family tradition is taking the little kids to the dollar store and giving them a list of family members to pick out gifts for--you never know what you might get!

  17. Oooh, what a great giveaway! My favourite (new) tradition is the holiday party I hold for my viola students, where we sight-read Xmas carols, Chanukah songs, and general wintry stuff and then drink hot cider and eat cookies. The kids love it and they sound fantastic, which makes everyone happy (and I send them home on a sugar high... heh).

  18. Is this open for Europeans too?
If so, my favorite holiday tradition is The Declaration of Christmas Peace from Turku, Finland. I think I could be without everything else; food, presents, decoration, snow, but not this... and of course, being with my family. :-) That's what Christmas is all about.

  20. Happy Holidays Hilary!

Oh, favorite traditions! There are so many great ones here!
Besides watching "White Christmas" on Christmas eve and hoping for a pretty snowfall to happen JUST when it does in the film (which it has... a couple of times over the years...) my sisters and I share "Fuzzy Wuzzy". He was our father's tiny little bear that he received from his sister, our aunt, before his appendix was removed when he was just 4.
Once we came along, Fuzzy started living in the Christmas tree. Had outfits made for him, cowboy hats sent from places like Arizona, and always always was hidden somewhere in the branches... the first of the four of us to find him got to dress him up and help hide him the next year.
Fuzzy is just like that old rhyme now... not very fuzzy any more. Now that dad is gone, we share him. Sending him between our homes (3 in NY and me in TN) to live in each of our trees every year. Dad's birthday was yesterday, the 8th. He would have been 60. I have fuzzy this year, and he happily wears a new green and red scarf for the occasion, looking out over my girls gifts beneath the tree he's comfy sitting in... in a chair made just for him too. :)

  21. What an awesome giveaway! I tweeted and facebooked.

My favorite Christmas tradition? I always loved reading Twas the Night Before Christmas on Christmas Eve right before the kiddies are put to bed.

One tradition I can't wait for is when the kids are older (3, 16 months, and will be born mid Febuary so this is awhile away yet) is for us to go out Christmas caroling. I used to sing in high school and college a Christmas program and I really miss it. I think we would sing songs at a hospital, rather than door to door.

  22. Woohoo! Thanks everyone! I can't wait to see who wins and I LOVE all these traditions! I love gathering around the kitchen with everyone! That's where the action is!!! :)

  23. WOW, Hilary, you must be seriously in the loop to get all those ARCs. ;)

I love watching a movie on Christmas day (preferably Disney ;P) with the family. It's always a fabulous way to maintain that sense of family, and plus usually the theatres are pretty empty. And snow. Snow is a mandatory tradition. ;)

Hm. I celebrate both Channukah and Yule (me Jewish, Wife Pagan), so making Sufganyot (Jewish Donuts), eating Latkes (Jewish Rösti), lightning the Menorah and watching my wife enjoying herself and her traditions. And singing Mao Tzur:)

  26. I would love to have these books for my classroom!!!

The last day of school before winter break is always crazy, so for fun in my classes we read Dave Barry's Annual Christmas Gift Guide. It is full of hilarious real gift ideas and the kids love writing about which ones they would buy and for who: -)

  28. I love the Christmas Eve PJ tradition now, but when I was really little I always thought we were getting a "real" present, and was so disappointed when I got PJ's!! Typical kid!

  29. Yay! Shiny, shiny books! I'm following you via GFC as Mercedes!

My dad had a crazy work schedule and we usually didn't get to open our presents until about 3 in the afternoon. It was TORTURE. To make it more bearable, Mom let us stay up as late as we could on Christmas Eve. We'd watch movies, run around in our Christmas Eve pajamas, and carry on. Then my brother and I would climb into the bunk beds, no matter how old we were, and we'd talk late into the night. It was kind of a yearly connect for us, especially when we were older. Santa always left our stockings on the foot of our beds. It was so fun!

  30. My favorite holiday tradition is getting the Christmas tree. Some years the whole family has trekked into the wilds with snow boots and shovels, spurred on by the thought of a post-tree-cutting lunch at a cozy nearby pub. Some years I indulge my father-in-law's love of a good bargain and go on safari to find the cheapest tree in the tri-county area. (Gas be damned!) Last year, I got a $10 noble fir that had fallen out of a helicoptor while being airlifted to Mexico. It looked in good shape, and gave me countless opportunities for good storytelling fodder over the holidays.

Thanks for the giveaway, Hilary. I'm your 605th follower.

  31. It's always a trick to figure out how to celebrate the holidays since my husband usually has to work. So it's not necessarily my favorite tradition, but one we make sure we celebrate every year - taking my kids and our Christmas dinner to his work's break room. We eat good food and open a gift each. Being together is important, not necessarily the surroundings. :)

Hi Hilary! AWESOME book giveaway! Thanks for the chance at winning. : )

Once my son got older, one of our family traditions was to open Christmas presents on Christmas eve, after coming home from church. Then we got the chance to sleep in on Christmas morning. Then when we are all awake on Christmas, I make a special brunch for my family.

  34. It wasn't my favorite tradition at the time, but now that I'm a parent, I can see the wisdom. We always got a small box of cereal in our Christmas stocking. We never got them at any other time, so it was special. We had to eat our box of cereal before we could open any other presents. That way my mom made sure we had at least something to eat on a day filled with candy and junk food.

  35. Wow, great giveaway! I'm a follower and I'll share this on Facebook. My favorite holiday tradition? When vacation begins, my husband, kids, and I drive to my sister's place in Jersey City. We spend the next day walking around Manhattan. Then we get a delicious dinner somewhere. It's fun to be a tourist for a day.
